Hiking, Life and near death experiences.....

Australia day we decided to celebrate our patriotism by hiking 'Bob Turners track'. A "relatively easy" (lies. all lies I tell you) 7 1/2 km hike down to the colo river!

Up until the last minute I had considered not going, feeling a bit unsure if I could hack it in my current 'lack of energy state'. But in the end I decided I didn't want to miss out and thought i'd be fine......

Oh how I was wrong. Oh so wrong. After a slow 2 hr descent with my sister Emma while the dads raced ahead with the kids, we made it down to the river and spent the next 4 hours playing, swimming, boating and relaxing. We had such a great time. And being outside always makes for a great dynamic between our kids (or in other words: fresh air + open space = no fighting, making it enjoyable for both kids and parents :)

OK now here comes the part about 'life' and 'near death experiences'......

I knew the ascent was going to be hard. It was hard for me just going down. but I tried to 'mentally' prepare myself for the 'climb out' and our family left a bit earlier so we (I) wouldn't hold the others up.....

And man it was hard. Harder than I thought. Never mind the 40 degree day with the burning sun, or the fact that our water ran out pretty quickly, it was hard. And it got us talking about all kinds of analogies while on that track.

One of them was life.

Sometimes we start out thinking "no worries, a 7 1/2 k hike, I can do that". But once we're there, once we've started, we realise that it's not quite as easy as we thought. And regardless of how hard it is we have to keep going. We have to trust that we can do it and that Heavenly Father is there helping us and giving us strength. So when we think we can't go on any further, We can. We have to, or we'll never make it to the top of whatever 'mountain' it is we're climbing.

And even though the hike was RIDICULOUSLY hard in some parts, there were still 'tender mercies' along the track. They came unexpectedly. but were so welcomed. After a really steep climb, all of a sudden there would be a flat easy part of the road. giving us a few moments of relief before the next rise. Before the next hard part came.

And isn't that just like life sometimes. Even amidst the 'hard parts' there are still tender mercies along the 'road' that help us through. Giving us momentary relief.

And as we take each step (even if they're only tiny little steps at a time) each one gets us a little closer to the 'end'. The end of whatever it is we want to finish. For us it was the end of a 'simple' hike. But sometimes it's something much harder than a hike. It's life.

But when 'it's' over, when we reach the destination, wherever that is, the end result is the same! Elation that it's done. Finished. The end. And I can't tell you how ELATED we were when we finally made it to the top!

Now despite referring to our 'little' hike as 'the near death experience', I don't regret going! Chad and I were both so happy that as a family we did something hard together. REALLY hard.

Lots of analogies were made amongst us on the track. All of them coming back to the same point. Sometimes things are hard. But if we never give up and keep 'climbing to the top', trusting in Heavenly Father, the 'hardness' will eventually pass and we'll be left stronger and better.

How grateful I am that we could share this with our kids and they got to experience the feeling of 'elation' at the top of that 'mountain' first hand. Everyone was so EXHAUSTED but so happy with what we had done!

POST SCRIPT: I have to say, Rylan and Zahn were champs. Serious Champs. (all the kids were) Rylan led the whole time and I didn't hear him complain once. And not only did he not complain, he was totally motivating the others too! I was a proud mumma as I watched him push himself the way he did (because physically he doesn't always do this)!

Simple Pleasures........

I saw this today and LOVED it!!!!!!

It really only takes little things to make a child happy.

I think i'm going to put this on my fridge so I can remember to embrace some of these simple pleasures! Especially the part that says "say YES as often as you can".......

Back to School Dinner Party!

We hereby introduce
our newest family tradition.....

The "Back to School Dinner Party"(inspired by the amazing and beautiful Stephanie Nielson and what she wrote HERE!)

A 'fancy' (ahem) dinner to celebrate these boys of ours as they embark on their 2010 journey that is school! For Rylan it's a return. For Zahn it's the start of something new. Very exciting stuff around here!

When I announced to the boys we were having a 'kings party', Zahn was thrilled and immediately announced he was going to wear one of his super hero costumes for the big event.

I explained a little about what is was and why it was a 'kings party' and said we were going to get all dressed up in our 'fancy clothes' (which means our church clothes :) and wear crowns and have king cups etc.

After I explained all this, Zahn said "No, I don't want to wear a suit I want to be a super hero. Super hero's choose the right". Then he said "and isn't it a party for me.....then why can't I wear what I want? (his comment really does make perfect sense when you think about it, so we decided to go with it. After all super hero's make good choices too don't they????

So thanks to Zahn's love of superheros, our official theme for 2010's Dinner Party was......

"Super hero's Choose the Right"! (he's only 5 - and there's lots of hero's in the scriptures. I tried to encourage him to be Moroni or Ammon but he was very decisive that he was going to be "Heat Blast (of course) and heat blast saves people so that's choosing the right......"

After all our preparations and meal planning and getting ready (and setting the table by 1pm) the night was a great success! Actually I loved it. (even with Jazzy's 6pm daily dinner tantrum ) We all loved it.

The menu:

Assortment of meats teppanyaki style (mixed seafood, beef and chicken with assortment of dipping sauces)
Oma's famous German potato salad
Sweet Potato slivers with Cherry tomatoes
Assortment of vegies
Grape Juice
Mini Berry delicious cakes with ice cream (they were delish)

The boys LOVED grilling their own meat and we had fun quizzing each other on different scenarios about choosing the right at school. Some of Zahn's questions were quite funny!

To finish off our evening the boys did a fashion parade in their uniforms (Jasmin did some modeling of her own......but don't worry when she goes to school she will be wearing more than the hat and the bag :)

And then Chad gave the boys a special fathers blessing for their school journey of 2010. I heard all the things I hoped for and more. It was very special. The best part of the night.

Holidays

After a few moments where everyone in the house (except myself) was either crying or wailing (and believe me there was wailing) the storm seems to have calmed and there is peace again.

Jasmin is asleep. The boys have forgiven each other and are playing and laughing.

Ahh sweet peace!!

In a few days school starts and all this 'time' will be over. Crying, fights and all, i'm gonna miss these boys when they're not here all day!

ps) let me clarify the above statement........ it's the boys i'll miss not the fighting and crying :)

Family Home Evening.....

One of the few things I LOVE about summer......

The extra day light hours we can't help but take advantage of! So much extra play time left when Chad comes home from work.

I especially love this after being inside.all.day.long!

Oh how I love this picture of Jazzy! It captures the way she feels about her dad (and being pushed on the swing by him) so perfectly.

Daylight savings we're going to miss you when it starts getting dark at 5pm instead of 8!

Week-ending

What better way to cool down on a 43 degree day than by doing this in the back yard......

Thanks to the pool Neets and Justin bought us for Christmas last year, we survived the heat. And the water was only FREEZING for the first few minutes of stepping into it :)

Titles

The official "King Cup" from our snow trip last year.

The cup was appropriately found, claimed and named by Zahn.

This boy (and this photo) are quite hilarious to us.

Boy, Boy, Girl, GIRL!!!!!!!!!

13 weeks 1 day.......

To say we are excited is a little understated. (even if I have ZERO energy and have been sleeping all day while Chad takes care of the kids.......we are STILL thrilled (and hoping i feel better soon........Chad's Christmas holidays have coincided perfectly with my 9 - 13 week need for sleep :)!!

We saw a specialist earlier this week and she confidently told us "it's a girl" (I didn't know you could tell at this stage.......but the specialist assured us that's what the baby appears to be, and said she's only been wrong 2 times out of 3000.

We could NOT be happier!!!!!
