I vowed last time that 80 - 90% of banana crops were wiped out in cyclone affected areas, that if it was to happen again - I would be prepared.
I admit sometimes I am extreme :)
$37.54. Approximately 16kgs.
Food storage money well spent.
And for a little more of 'scaled' perspective.......
It was about 10 bags full and they took up half the trolly. (It was funny watching people 'observe' our stash, and even funnier when a small group of people gathered around asking questions, then quickly followed suit :)
We will at least have banana muffins and smoothies for a little while longer!!
ps) Incase you're thinking like the lady in ALDI that said, "they won't last you very long dear", they are peeled, cut up, sealed in air tight bags and frozen. Not left on the bench in the hope that they will 'last' :)

I love it. Smart girl but in Brisbane the prices have already gone up. In fact the day after they went up to $7.99 kg why?? The one in the shop were not affected! Anyway I still buy but only a few at a time.
love it! very wise move - enjoy your banana feast :)
We don't have quite as many, but did buy a lot of bananas as well - I know they're such a great fruit and I hate to see them get so expensive.
Laree, I was panicking that the prices would go up straight away here too...hahaha - sad I know :) when I bought these last week coles and woolys had already put their prices up to $6 - $7 but trusty old aldi still had them at $2.29! And Leah - I don't think you were here last time they were wiped out but shops were charging over $15.00 a Kg. It was SO sad (bananas are my fav!) I would buy the kids one each when we went shopping every week! It was like the ultimate treat....hahahaha!
Great speculating! If you have any stock market tips please put them on your blog as well so we can all reap the benefits.
your clever aren't you
Panu - my only stock market tip is buy Apple shares. That's what I've heard anyway :)
i have a whole bag in my freezer too- i wish i had read this post before though as i didn't peel mine-i was too lazy!! eep.
oh neets, they freeze way better peeled. This is sooo funny Lis. As soon as we saw the crops on the news Darren said 'oh we will have to start buying bananas at the local growes market'. This is what he did last time, like suddenly bananas were his favourite and he couldn't live without them (when in actual fact he eats one now and then). In fact back in that time he would be willing to pay up to $6kg for them (and buy huge piles like in you picture) knowing that this was a bargain compared to $17 in the shops.
So my response to him this time was, its ok we CAN survive without bananas for a while, we will just eat other fruit.
I remember a couple of years ago same thing happened, bananas got really expensive... but because no one was buying them, shops always had to discount them once they start to get black, so I could always get them at a reasonable price. Not everyone likes black bananas, but I mainly use them to make banana shake, so it is the black ones that I want, they are so much sweeter.
The fruit on our tree started ripening just after the cyclone. They take longer to ripen on the tree so still have a few weeks left before we have to brave the price hikes.
