So sticking with the theme of books we love (from the last post), I also love a GOOD parenting book. For my birthday last year I gifted myself with this one (Chad was away, so what's a girl to do. .miss out. I think not :)
This is definitely one of my FAVOURITE parenting books. I love it because it's so enjoyable and EASY to read. It's real, inspirational and offers practical and achievable ways to "Making Motherhood Magnificent" and finding joy in the little things. Even when the journey is sometimes crazy and hard! And don't we all know that Motherhood is at times both of those things :)
The truth is I want to give this book to everyone I know. That's how much I enjoyed reading it (and I am a BIG 'fan' of the Eyres and love Shawni's blog). Recently I 'acquired' a few more copies and thought it would be fun to give ONE away on this here little blog! After all this is my birth week as Chad calls it, so why not share the love (and the gifts :) right??
This will likely be my one and only 'giveaway' (which by the way Chad thinks is quite 'funny' that i'm doing, but it's my birthday so i'll CRY give one away if I want to :) and since this post and the last one are really all about good books, why not???
So TO ENTER, leave a comment telling us either your favourite children's book or one of your personal favourites (for the record, Twilight doesn't count - even though we know we all love it, even if we don't admit it :)!!
Next Friday (which happens to be Chad's birthday) we'll randomly pick someone to RECEIVE the book :)
POST SCRIPT: Just for the record (OK this is really to answer Chad's questions relating to the 'giveaway' :) the book is NEW, not my used copy, It is FREE and postage is NOT $25 as Chad suggested. there is NO postage cost.....It is a giveaway! If you (Chad) or anyone else have any other questions feel free to ask :)
Can't wait to hear your favourite books!!

haha good one listy!
ok, like i said, mine atm is 'there's a hippo.. on my roof eating cake'.
livy loves it- she totally relates to it and gets very excited and squeels 'same as YOU!!' (meaning herself) on every page. adorable!
Ahahaha, oh Felicity, when I saw the picture I cracked up! I actually thought it was that photography book you and I love so much. I was putting my hand up so so high to receive it. Hahahahahhahah.
I already have this book, but now you have inspired me to actually read it.
In answer to your question though, I really love "You are Special" by Max Lucado.
We love Max Lucado too, we have
You are special, also in a board book, A hat for Ivan, The way home Princess story, With you all the way,and Most Marvelous Gift
My fav book at the moment, well i have 2 on the go, one audio and one reading. Audio is Septimus Heap. Really compelling and wonderfully read.
Reading is The Kingdom And The Crown.
Volume one Fishers of Men. Gerald Lund, need I say more. It is a historical novel set in New Testament times. How people came to learn of Jesus of Nazareth and gained a testimony of his Messiahship (if there is such a word)and there were those of course who would not believe. It tells of the customs, beliefs, lifestyle and describes the landscape of the area. It is wonderfully written to the point that you are actually living and experiencing what they are feeling too.
The Wednesday Letters. I read this in January. Beautiful book.
Brianna, My Brother and the Blog.
( being bloggers you would probably enjoy this one.)
Read this in February. Another one of those books where you become intertwined with the lives of the people in the book.
I hope this qualifies me for entry into your little give away.
I have been a good girl and am doing lots of reading, scriptures included.
love
Mumma xx
I was thinking of a few I have read lately and one I think I like best was "Book of a Thousand Days" by Shannon Hale (just read another of hers and loved it, really like her relaxed writing style) - but anyway sorry, I think I liked this one so much as the loyalty the main character shows, and how she still has smarts and with that loyalty and smarts, proves her worth and therefore everyone loves her.... including her Prince :).... I'm a romantic at heart, what can I say....
Later - Shy
Emma told a story like Grandma however the computer froze and she lost it... Spew'n all that typing haha... Maybe she'll try again. I know she did say that ofcourse there would be no postage as you can just bring it over ;)))
LOLzzz
Thanks Felicity for contacting me that was a VERY lovely suprise. I will enter your competition soon. Just gotta go and so something with the boys as I promised them.
Jillina I was excited when I came across your name and blog :) it's been so long since our college days! I LOVE finding blogs of old friends!! such a great way to keep in touch!!
oh i love me a good parenting book! We loved 7 habits of highly effective families. And one old book i got from the library once was one of the best i have read was called "how to behave so your kids will too"
kids books, I have an old one from when I grew up called The big orange splot. Its awesome. We mainly get books from the library so dont have many 'favourites' as they like everything
Here are Jayden's fav's:
Diary of a wimpy kid - Jeff Kinney
The Bakugan Offical Handbook
The Twits - Roald Dahl
George's Marvellous Medicine (R.D)
Matilda (R.D)
Fantastic Mr Fox (R.D)
Zac Powers Undercover - H.I Larry (thanks to RYLAN'S Holiday bookclub last year)
Family Fave:
My Lucky Day
by Keiko Kasza
....It's a Picture book about a clever & daring pig who goes to visit MR FOX. He persuades Mr fox not to eat him yet. First he needs to fatten him up by feeding him. Then he needs to making sure he's clean by giving him a scrub in a warm bath. And, surely he'd be more appetizing with tender meat. Mr fox agrees to give him a massage. Mr Fox is so exhausted that he passes out and the pig tottles off home with some left overs.
Morgan & I are supposedly having a competition this year to see who can read the most books. I hardly have time to sit around reading so I've been LISTENING on my ipod as I go about my business. He is still winning!
I've got a far as
Persuasion - Jane Austen (twice - no NOT because i didnt understand it - I just happened to love it)
Septumus Heap - Flyte
Septumus Heap - Physik both by Angie Sage
A Horse and his boy - C S Lewis
Jay & I also have unfinished business with SAMURAI KIDS - WHITE CRANE ....which we were enjoying but he wants me to add this too.
Mel & boys
Oh - this isnt my blog?
hehehe
Mel
I'm not having much luck trying to leave a message on this blog, Colin's computer froze last night after I had finally finished, and this morning my computer died altogether. ANYWAY......
The children and I love books and have read some great ones. Finding new books to read each year for the premiers reading challenge has become a challenge in itself.
We love so many but here are a few of the best!
'Ish' and 'The Dot' by Peter Reynolds.'Whose afraid of the Big bad book?' by Lauren Child and all the Dr. Seuss books.
As the Kids are getting older we have discovered some great series
'Deltora Quest','Rowan of Rin' and 'The Fairy Realm' by Emily Rodda
'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' by Jeff Kinney. 'The Twits', 'George's Marvellous Medicine', and
'Fantastic Mr Fox', Roald Dahl
'The 39 Clues' and of course 'Flat Stanly'.
Braden would like me to add 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief' which he has just finished.
Yay! A competition! :)
If I enter more than one book do I have a higher chance of winning?! :) Here are some of my favorites (though I don't know many authors but could find them out on request):
Picture/little kid books:
-Piggy Pie (so cute)
-Liza Lou and the yeller belly swamp (My mom's favorite growing up. Problem solving, fun voices.)
-All the Shel Silverstein poem books
-All Dr. Seuss but I partic. like Horton Hears a Who
-Fanny's Dream (so darling - a farmer cinderella who learns that to be happy doesn't mean you have to marry a prince/be rich. Sweet.)
-It's a spoon not a shovel (My niece Abbey would always have me read this to her - poetry/multiple choice book on learning manners - finding clues in the pictures.)
-I'll love you forever (I always thought this book was so tender.)
Older children/young adult:
-The Girl who Owned a City (I bet Rylan would like this - one of my very favorites. Premise is a disease has wiped out all adults and the children have to learn how to survive (sounds morbid but isn't) all about problem solving and survival and communities. I really liked it and would read it to my class every year.)
-Bridge to Terabithia (Loved it, though sad)
-Wrinkle in Time (Love it!!!)
-All the Harry Potters (Felicity you've got to give them a chance - you'll get hooked.)
-Anne of Green Gables books (I loved these growing up but just reread them recently and didn't LOVE them as much as I did as a kid.)
- Star Girl (being yourself - girl in highschool)
-There's a boy in the girls' bathroom (such a cute story about a boy who learns not to be a bully - my fourth graders really liked it.)
Hmm.. there's my list for now. :) You should get all those books for your kids!!! :)
Love Leah
Heya! I'm a secret blog stalker since you wrote on my sister Tammy's blog and Jillina's, and I just had to write and tell you about 3 children's books written by the same author, which I love! And I think you would too - they are all really cute and have special meaning behind them. The author is Aaron Blabey, and his books are 'Pearl Barley & Charlie Parsley', 'Stanley Paste', and 'Sunday Chutney'. If you haven't read or seen them, look them up!!! :)
Listy = Tell Leah if she liked the Harry Potter series she would enjoy Septimus Heap by Angie Sage. You know Im a HUGE Harry Potter fan . Im onto the 4th of 5 (i think there are 5) in the septimus heap series.
I love a good book, but I think I am little too moralistic and idealistic. I often stick to classics because they generally have no inappropriate material. When I am tiring of the old languages I tend to read children’s novels. So a couple of our family favourites are:
For the toddlers:
A very hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle; wonderful concept teaching counting and days of the week
There’s a see in my bedroom story by Margaret Wild
Thomas the Tank Engine Series – Our boys role play speaking in third person and usually they like the girl trains the best(hopefully womanisers not pansies :)
Diggerman by Andrea Zimmerman – It’s a wonderful story of a little boy who tells how he is going to be a diggerman and will let his little brother be apart of it. I love sibling stories
Charlie and Lola – Wonderful sibling stories written through childrens' eyes. I love the way these kids talk, sooo cute.
For me:
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - A bit haunting at times and not an easy read but beautiful with inspiring themes.
My childhood favourite – Hating Alison Ashley by Robin Klien - An Australian novel recently made into a movie with Delta Goodrem. The movie is set more in high school but the novel is more in primary school. As a child I related to a lot of this book. The movie is a bit of a laugh too.
A recent great read was
"A Dab of Dickens & A Touch of Twain: Literary Lives from Shakespeare's Old England to Frost's New England" by Elliot Engel. Its an excellent insight into come great authors over time. Fascinating read to know a bit of their backgrounds and how they each contributed to the development of literature – like who created the cliff-hanger concept, who invented series etc etc etc Engel writes almost like you are sitting in a casual lecture theatre listening to a great stories about the great writers of our history.
Felicity I think your boys (maybe in the future) would enjoy Rick Riordans "Percy Jackson and The Ligtning Thief" series. I've got a great one but I've forgotten it at the moment. Get back to you. Sorry if this was 25 words of less - I'd be disqualified hahaha
to abby I really like Pearl Barley & Charlie Parsley and Sunday Chutney, i've read them at the school library.
We are going to get out Stanley Paste from our library.
see ya. from rylan
Hi Felicity, I lost your blog address but just found you again, glad I did. Happy Birth week!!
My favourite parenting book would have to be "The Secret of Happy Children" by Steve Biddulph. An oldie but a goody, all about positive parenting and behaviour etc.
As for favourite childrens books we love any Richard Scarry books and every Roald Dahl book too!
Lishaxx
To Pratty Ratts... I agree that Jane Austen's Persuasion is a great novel very under-rated and in many ways the characters are more admirable than those of Pride and Predjudice.
To Felicity I feel kinda awkward in trying to get a free anything from my friend. In saying that I think it is a very COOL and fun idea. Thanks. I will need to email you soon with a huge list of questions to catch up on the last decade...ewww feeling old. :)
Happy Birthday Week, Felicity! I've been wanting to read this book for a while, you know I love Shawni's blog too!
We love books in our home, even with the few things we brought with us here to Perth we still made sure we brought some good books. Some of our favourite kids books:
Where the Wild Things Are (of course)
All the Beatrix Potter books
Graeme Base's books, especially Uno's Garden
We're loving The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss right now.
We're also loving Roald Dahl books with Hyrum, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I always think the classics are the best first port of call for me and the boys. When we started reading the Beatrix Potter books with them a few years ago I thought the language would put them off but they LOVE them. And I'm slowly developing a list of books I want to move through with them over the next few years of classic must reads.
Little Reuben and i went on a wee date today. Dad stayed home with Jayden while we went to the library (and sushi). We looked up some of the many books that have been recommended by you and your lovely "followers". have put on hold A bad case of the stripes....Got some poem books thanks to LEAH's suggestions... and found Pearl Barley and Charile Parsley thanks to ABBY.
We can use the list for next few visits Im sure!
To Jillina - My husband says "That's a big call!!" (re: your comment Pride and Prej VS Persuasion).....But I cant see why Persuasion shouldnt be just as popular!!
We love Max Lucado too, we have all his books but You Are Special.
I am currently reading "Behind Every Good Man" by John Bytheway.
And once my friend has finished with The Kingdom and The Crown series I will be reading that too. I can't wait to read it.
Thanks for sharing your family and books with us on your blog.
Love
Miranda your Cous.
To Mr Pratty Ratts, Perhaps it is a big call. I just remember really loving it. It has been sometime since I have read both. So over the next while (probably a year, very busy), I will read both and see if I still agree with my previous comment. Cheers
