Creative Pursuits

"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before"

I don't know if this is really true for everyone. But it's definitely something that is true for me.

I just finished reading "The Remarkable Soul Of A Woman" (by Dieter F. Uchtdorf" - I know he's awesome isn't he :) and there were lots of little literary gems I was left thinking about.

"It appears that our splendid sisters sometimes undervalue their abilities - they focus on what is lacking or imperfect rather than what has been accomplished and who they really are"

Simple words I know. But they spoke to me because sometimes I procrastinate 'creative challenges' I set for myself because I'm afraid unsure of what the outcome will be. (even though i'm constantly telling my kids, If you want to be good at something. Really good. You have to "work it").

"Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty"

I love photography. Really love it. And although it may not be taking 'unorganised matter' into my hands, It is a creative outlet that brings me that feeling of 'deep satisfaction and fulfillment'.

So after reading this book and in order to push myself a little (maybe even a lot :),  I've decided to do some sort of photographic challenge every month! Something I can learn from and maybe even something that will make me feel uncomfortable :)

So here's a little glimpse at my 'challenge' for April (Ok - this wasn't actually trying something 'technically' new or challenging......but it's been a while since I've photographed anyone other than my own kids so I'm still counting it :)

WARNING: there are a few pictures - so beware of carpal tunnel ;)

Wow Felicity that is fantastic photography. What kind of camera do you use? I only use my camera on my mobile phone and its poo :)
I've never been good at photography. Actually you've got me thinking about what are my talents. I think just like my body shape changed since the birth of my children, my talents have changed.
I remember thinking that I have to look at different cuts of clothing for my new body. Now I have to do a re-evaluation on my talents.
Some have died, some have probably emerged. I must get on my knees and ask my Heavenly Father to help me know which talents to focus on.

Love ya

I dont know if that makes sense... I'm super tired

To Felicity - Funny that you wrote that quote on your blog. I havent read the book but i came across this very quote recently and SAVE it because I thought it was an important one! You must be my sister!!

To Jillina - I always love the comments you leave for my sis. felicity. You definitely have a talent for written expression. Loved your analogy of trying some new cuts.....I also 'suspect' that you have a spiritual gift. You know how to get personal direction from the greatest source! some people wouldn't even think to ask Heavenly Father about their talents and their time.....

These pictures are so beautiful Felicity. I love the picture of Charity on her own, it just encapsulates who she is so completely! I so agree with what you said as well, we are always encouraging our own kids to develop their talents and yet we often neglect our own. I'm looking forward to seeing these new challenges you set for yourself!
