It is official. We 'celebrate' Halloween. Whatever that actually means ;)
I'll admit that in the past I have felt 'torn' about whether or not I thought halloween was OK? You know the whole 'evil spirits rising from the dead morbid thing. Well yeah, that's why I've questioned it. And reading other Aussie blogs (specifically LDS Aussies) I know I'm not alone in this line of thinking.
Growing up we didn't celebrate it (and I remember desperately wanting to go trick-or-treating) because of the evil connotations. That's what I always thought anyway? Mum?? So when a few years ago our ward had their first Trunk-or-treat, I thought it was the strangest thing. Halloween party at the chapel???
Fast forward a few years and clearly I am subject to propaganda because we have been talking about the 'trunk-or-treat' and what costumes everyone is wearing for a couple of months now :)
So we have decided. We officially 'celebrate' Halloween. It's a night about dressing up, getting together with friends, playing games, decorating our boots and sharing treats. We don't get into the 'gory.evil.scary' side of things. It's just a bit of fun :)
Unless you consider these too scary......
or these........they do have a warning on them :)
This year we were 'lucky enough' to go to 2 'trunk-or-treats' (great double the goodies = kids heaven :)
So because I am a genius and I really really don't like lollies for the kids WE decided to keep all our treats from the first 'party' (all the lollies had to be individually wrapped which made it perfect ;) and give them away at the second one! I gave credit for the brilliant idea to Zahn ;) and everyone agreed it was perfect (muahahahahaha - oh my sweet innocent children. Little did they know that at the second trunk or treat, there would be about 15 cars giving out 'sweets' instead of about 50 cars like at the first :)
This was their first stash
And this was the second.......hahahahaha! Bless their little hearts they were just as excited about the second batch as the first :)
So we had a cowboy (minus his hat?), a fairy and of course a Harry.
Rylan won 'best costume' out of the kids at the first one, and I don't think it's an understatement to say, he considers it one of his greatest achievements of his life :) He may have squealed in delight when it was announced :) And the trophy he received is now proudly displayed with his others!
There were games and face painting by the youth.....(and a jumping castle at one of them)!
the car after it was 'trashed' by little hands grabbing lollies, cupcakes and jellies.
and I have to share this pic of my niece because it may be the cutest halloween costume I've ever seen.
Incase you can't tell, she was a bunch of grapes. SO.CUTE.
Next year I know what I'm making for Lily :)

What a crack up about the lolly thing. I dont like lollies for kids much either. So I feel a kindred spirit in you. I save my children's party bags from birthday parties in a container. They have been there for ages. Last night I gave them to unexpected Halloweeners at the door step. The wrapped kind of course.
soooo cute!! that grape outfit! good luck for getting the kid to wear it.. dont think mine would have! and smart thinking on the lolly thing!! you are an evil genius.... I'm jelous just so you know!! mwah aha hahah maybe it was just a parenting thing from the 70's and 80's for why lds australian's were so against it????
oh and I have to add that my daughter would die of happiness to be crowned best dressed. Our school has 2-3 themed discos each year. Kalani put sooo much effort in (well a 'kids' effort) and she never wins.. one time I think she was actually the best, but because she doesnt go show off to the principal etc she doesnt win. She's always so upset and say 'but mum I was the best dressed!!' lol lol. I just tell her there are usually about 6 or so people that you can definately tell will be one of the winners, and that you can't all win!!
so congrats to your son for finally winnning!! ha hah
Bobbie - I feel your daughters pain :) I couldn't believe Rylan won either hahahaha only because it was at our new ward and he really didn't know anyone there and there were SO many people there!! But if you count our family + my sisters family that came with us, that's 11 people right there and I can just imagine him soliciting votes for himself hahaha. We weren't even going to stay for the announcement of who won and we were in the car leaving, but when he told us that his cousins had all voted for him and a few 'new friends' Chad pulled over and ran back inside with him hahaha. It was all very exciting when he came racing out waving his trophy! Hope your girl wins one soon :)
I've always thought celebrating halloween at the church was funny. But boy do the kids love getting to be with their friends :)
It must be an Aussie thing because we have no problems celebrating Halloween here in the states even as church memembers. As far as I can think back, we have celebrated Halloween. Today Halloween is more like a big costume party here in the States and carnival. It brings neighbors out of their houses for bonfires, weenie roast and chili. Children play games. Don't know how that could be so bad. Of course scary movies come out in the movie theaters, but I wouldn't to these Halloween or not. I guess since the General Authorities haven't come out against it then it must be ok. Oh, and the little one who fell in the pond was onl wearing jeans and a nice shirt no suit.
Yay for Halloween - help me convert all of Australia! Yah - to me it's a holiday to be with family and friends, dress up in costumes and eat lots of candy. How can that be bad? :)
ps the grape costume so cute - but what about the paranoid/balloon mom in me?
